Over the past 10 years Ongama has worked locally and abroad with some of the country’s top musicians. He has now found home and full expression in the Concrete Lions.
Ben Dey and The Concrete Lions is an Afro/Indie pop-rock band from Cape Town. The band was co-founded by Ben Dey and Ongoma Mona in 2015. BDCL’s unique sound resonates with audiences locally and abroad.
Ben is a prolific lyricist who draws inspiration from the every day. His memorable hooks are held together by poetic verses that use commercial metaphors to express subversive socio, political and environmental themes.
Alex and Ben started their first band when they were 14 years old. They covered songs by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and other bands that they were listening to at the time. Given their long friendship and history, Alex was a natural fit to Ben and Ongoma’s new band.
Now a full 4-piece band, Ben Dey and The Concrete Lions originally consisted of Lead singer Songwriter, Ben Dey and his sidekick Ongama (Ongs) – the crazy African man with the massive hat and the Juluka esque moves. They sound like a druggy mix of Afro Indie Rock. Their single ‘Easy Love’ is magic. It’s unlike any song I have heard from a South African band in a very long time. It reminds me of what it would’ve been like to see Richard Ashcroft playing one of his first ever gigs to a tiny crowd.
On their path to World Domination, Ben and Ongama recently went to the UK to play some shows. The band who are pretty much forging their path in the music industry and sussing out the correct route to go, are making sure they make as few mistakes as they can.
