About Thembeka Mnguni
Asked whether she has regrets over her demanding career, Mnguni said:
“Absolutely not. I have an autistic son who needs to attend a private institution. I am now able to pay for his school fees, something I couldn’t do some years ago."
Thembeka Mnguni is originally from Bizana, but has been residing in Durban since she was a child. She is first mother to her five-year-old son who is autistic, from whom she draws much inspiration. The powerful singer considers herself to be a ‘diva’ by profession through her music by choosing to represent all the divas who are scared to take a chance in life.
2016’s breathtaking season of The Voice SA saw reputable Universal Records sign not only the winner of the competition, but nine other contestants who were just too good to let go.
Among the contestants, mainly because of her compelling background and powerhouse voice, was former corporate worker, Thembeka Mnguni, with a dream to be a singer.
Thembeka toured the world with theatre impresario Pieter Toerien’s productions of the musicals Grease and High School Musical, and was also nominated for a Naledi Award for Best Newcomer.
Thembeka discloses that she plans to dedicate her time to the studio whenever her schedule allows her to produce more music for her fans.

She would love to collaborate with her former coach, Karen Zoid, Thandiswa Mazwai and Kwesta or Caspper Nyovest. She wishes to bring RnB soul music to South Africa as the likes of Aretha Franklin, Jennifer Hudson, Tina Turner and like our very own, now deceased, TK. “South Africans have an amazing ear for good music. They are ready for that and I will give it to them with pleasure!”
She has since become a busy figure performing at gigs and events countrywide and occasional stints abroad.
“I have been expressing my art all over the country. I’ve been so busy that I barely have time to spend with my son, that is still unusual for me,” she said.
The singer starred as a diva in an on-stage adult musical called Priscilla Queen of The Desert, which took place in 2017, with an all-South African cast.
She had also performed at the Starlight Classics concert in Cape Town, alongside pianist Charl du Plessis and the vibrant Mzansi Youth Choir, just to name a few.
Thembeka credits her participation in The Voice for a “better life”. She and her autistic son, Sabelo, now live in Durban.
Mnguni’s future plans include hosting her own TV show and incorporating all the veterans she looked up to as a little girl.
She also has plans of having her own trust fund aimed at bettering the lives of children with autism.
In advising this year’s contestants of The Voice, Mnguni simply said: “Listen to the coaches.
Those who want to prosper should listen to the coaches, take notes and suck in the knowledge they receive because the coaches know what they are doing.”
