Concluding 6 live television appearances nationwide on IdolsSA Season 11, with a staggering total of 79 million votes cast in 2015 and performing alongside South Africa’s top musicians, Urban Strings proudly presents their latest idée fixe, The Urban Cellist/s
It is the brainchild of creative director and musician Larah Eksteen and promises to enthrall audiences globally. “There’s nothing like this in South Africa. Hip cool professional male instrumentalists, taking their classical and jazz knowledge and grooving along to current trending hits with their swanky electric cellos and basses. It’s time for something fresh and nu school,” says Eksteen.
The outfit showcases two options. The first is a dynamic duo performance between electric cello and electric upright bass and the second, a sleek solo performance by either of the two. There is a perfect balance between the soaring cello melodies and resonant bass accompaniment, immersing colourful tones with innovative music production.
At the start of the new millennium electric string instruments became exceedingly en vogue. Today these ultramodern creations with their counterparts are popular additions to contemporary, rock, electronic and dance music productions. It has paved the way for improvisation, collaboration and took instrumental music to the next level.
Set to captivate the corporate entertainment world, The Urban Cellist will be working alongside the Urban Strings collective on their debut album in 2016.
